PARTS OF SPEECH

We have learnt about sentences, types of sentences and parts of a sentence. Now we will learn how we can make our sentences more meaning full, beautiful and use full.

With the help of parts of speech we can do this task.

In total we have eight parts of speech.  Each part has a certain function, and they all are important in the English language.

All the parts of speech in English are used to make sentences. All sentences include two parts: the subject and the verb (this is also known as the predicate). The subject is the person or thing that does something or that is described in the sentence. The verb is the action the person or thing takes or the description of the person or thing. If a sentence doesn’t have a subject and a verb, it is not a complete sentence (e.g., in the sentence “Went to bed,” we don’t know who went to bed).

Parts of speech:- There are eight parts of speech:-

Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection

1.  Noun- Naming words

2.  Pronoun- Replacing words

3.  Verb- Action words

4.  Adverb- Describing words (verb)

5.  Adjective- Describing words (Noun and Pronoun)

6.  Preposition- Position words

7.  Conjunction- Joining words

8.  Interjection- Surprising words

4 Types of Sentences: Definitions, Examples and Tips

Declarative sentences always start with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Declarative sentences are simply statements and these are the most common type of sentences in the English language.

Example:-

·       I am a student.

·       She is a beautiful girl.

·       He is a doctor.

·       I am speaking English.

·       My mother is not going to market.

·       Ram was playing.

·       They are studying.

·       Mansi called me yesterday.

Imperative sentences give us a sense of order and request.

Example:

·       Do not make noise.

·       Please help me.

·       Please give me a glass of water.

·       Stop him.

·       Please open with care.

·       Smile please.

·       Follow me.

·       Go back to school.

·       Walk slowly.

·       Read carefully.

Exclamatory sentences give us sense of sudden expression and feelings. These sentences always have an exclamatory mark.

Example:

·       Wow! What a nice dress.

·       What a nice shot!

·       How wonderful she is!

·       Wow! That's amazing!

·       Happy birthday, Yash!

Interrogative sentences always give us a sense of questions. We use these sentences to ask something or to know something. These sentences always end with a questions mark.

Example:

·       What is your name?

·       What do you do?

·       Do you learn English with English spoken classes?

Now it’s your turn to identify the type of sentences:-

·       Ram plays football.

·       Riya is helping her mother.

·       I am your teacher.

·       Do you speak English?

·       Where do you live?

·       Stop him.

·       Please call me.

·       How wonderful she is!

·       Wow! That's amazing!

Punctuation marks:-

At the end of sentences, we use a punctuation sign:

(.)- Full stop (period)

(?)- Question

(!)- Exclamatory mark

Subject and predicate:-

Any sentence can be broken down into two main components, the subject of the sentence and the sentence’s predicate.

·         Subject- Doer in a sentence

·         Predicate - Remaining words in the sentence

Predicate gives us more information about subject (doer).

Example: - He was playing football.

Subject- He

Predicate- was playing football.

Find subject and predicate in the following sentences:-

·       She goes to park.

·       The sun was shining brightly.

·       The dogs were barking loudly.

·       The pretty girl was wearing a blue frock.

·       My younger brother serves in the army.

·       The man and his wife were working in their garden.

·       My mother and my aunt are trained classical dancers.

·       You don’t have to wait for me.

·       We will no longer tolerate this.

·       The little tree was covered with needles instead of leaves.

·       A rich merchant was passing by the shoemaker’s window.

Consonants:-  The majority of letters in the alphabet are consonant letters. Most consonant letters have only one sound and rarely sound like their name.

B C D F G H J K

Vowels:- Five of the 26 alphabet letters are vowels: AEIO, and U. The letter Y is sometimes considered a sixth vowel because it can sound like other vowels.
